When is a Skilled Nursing Facility or Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center Right for Me?

Rehabilitation and nursing services are for anyone of any age. Those that use or need this care usually need it for post-hospital, short-term recovery or longer term care.

Rehabilitation Services

Rehabilitation services include physical, occupational and speech therapies. As a general rule, these services are dedicated to the restoration of health to a resident’s prior level of function. The programs are ideal for those who have been released from a hospital following an injury, stroke, surgery or illness, but who still require further strengthening and nursing care before returning home.

Although it varies from community to community, the therapy programs and nursing services generally focus on those with the following needs:

  • Post-operative care.
  • Hip or knee surgery or replacement.
  • Cardiac by-pass.
  • Amputation.
  • CVA/stroke.
  • Orthopedic related injuries.
  • Dysphasia.
  • Reconditioning/strengthening.
  • Wound care.
  • Pain management.
  • Neurological disorders.
  • Dementia care.
  • Diabetic care.
  • Terminal illness care.

Medical Services and Amenities

Most skilled nursing and rehabilitation communities will offer some or all of these supportive services and amenities:

  • Licensed Nurses and Certified Nursing Assistants 24 hours a day.
  • Medication supervision and/or administration, including storing and reordering.
  • Administration of oxygen and I.V. therapy.
  • Wound management.
  • Assistance and programming for cognitive impairment.
  • Help or supervision of bathing, dressing, eating, grooming, ambulation, transferring and toileting with incontinence care.
  • Three meals per day, including special diet options to comply with physician orders.
  • Services of a Registered Dietician.
  • Social services and appointment scheduling.
  • Coordination of specialized medical equipment needs.
  • Housekeeping services daily, including linen service and personal laundry service.
  • Activity, recreation and exercise programs to meet needs and satisfy interests.
  • All utilities, including local telephone and cable television.
  • Limited local transportation service.
  • Medical Director oversight of Care Center services.

Oftentimes addition Medical Services are offered, for an additional fee. This may include:

  • Private physician services.
  • Audiology, podiatry, ophthalmology, dental and hospice services.
  • Psychiatric and psychological evaluations.
  • Pharmacist private consultation.
  • Diagnostic laboratory and X-ray studies.
