Brookdale Senior Living, the largest owner and operator of senior living communities, lost a total of nearly 40,000 pounds after its second employer-sponsored weight loss competition, The Brookdale Weigh – Take Two, this year. Out of 35,000 employees, almost 2,100 actively participated within 558 teams.
“We responded to the enthusiasm and undeniable success of our first-ever Brookdale Weigh earlier this year with this most recent program, The Brookdale Weigh – Take Two,” said Glenn Maul, senior vice president of human resources for Brookdale. “We expanded on the best part of the program, its flexibility, and gave tools, resources, and encouragement for everyone to make healthier lifestyle choices. Again, we were overwhelmed with the results and positive response of associates, both individuals and teams.”
The Brookdale Weigh – Take Two began on Sept. 14, and was a nine-week weight loss challenge and team competition. Teams consisted of three-five employees. Team standings were based on collective percentage of weight loss.
The three top company-wide winning teams lost 14.56, 13.56 and 12.21 percent of total body weight, respectively.
“With the second session, everyone is a winner. By simply making the commitment to lose even a few pounds, eat healthier or start an exercise program, associates have taken steps toward wellness and living a healthier life,” said Maul. “Both of these sessions of the Brookdale Weigh, associates embracing a healthier lifestyle, and new Pathways to Wellness offering of associate benefits help to control the rising cost of healthcare. In the end, associates really benefit, and we hope to continue what we have started.”
Cash prizes were awarded to the top three teams in each regional division and company-wide. Each winning team member received anywhere from $750 to $100 each.
“With the second session, everyone is a winner. By simply making the commitment to lose even a few pounds, eat healthier or start an exercise program, associates have taken steps toward wellness and living a healthier life,” said Maul. “Associates have shared heartwarming and inspiring personal success stories, and we hope to continue what we have started.”
The initial Brookdale Weigh started on March 30 and went until June 21. At that time, 30,000 pounds were lost. About 5,000 associates participated.
