Lifestyle Medicine - an Emerging Specialty

The great inventor Thomas Edison said in 1902 that, "The doctor of the future will give no medicines but will interest his or her patients in the care of the human frame, in a proper diet and in the cause and prevention of disease." Edison’s prediction was partly right. We are a long way from doctors giving no medicine, but there is a movement in medicine to focus more on lifestyle habits as a part of a holistic approach to treating patients. There is a new specialty emerging in medicine known as Lifestyle Medicine.

Helping Aging Seniors

Helping and caring for an aging senior can be a daunting task. There is a plethora of information-sometimes too much, on the web and elsewhere. Finding care options and resources is in some ways the easy part. The true difficulty can come in the emotional challenges that arise in knowing when and how to intervene. There is a delicate balance between too little and too much intervention and often it is hard to walk that line.

Reflections on September 11

This week marked the 10th Anniversary of the events of September 11, 2001. Every adult in America can recount where they were on that day as all of our lives were changed forever. I was working at a retirement community and as the day’s events unfolded, the community came together for a prayer service.

Happy Labor Day

As I reflect on this Labor Day holiday two groups of people come to mind. First, I think our Brookdale Senior Living residents and their senior cohorts throughout our country. The current generation of older seniors-in their 80s and older-has contributed so much to our country through their hard work and innovations. They built the infrastructure of our country, gave us discoveries like penicillin, television and air travel that have changed the world.
