November is National Caregiver Month-it also happens to be the month that we honor our veterans with Veterans Day (11-11-11 this year!). At Brookdale Senior Living-we wish to honor all of those who care for a loved one, especially those who have served our country as veterans.

October is Breast Cancer Awarenesss Month

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women in the United States, aside from skin cancer. According to the American Cancer Society, an estimated 192,370 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed among women in the United States this year. I don’t think I know anyone who has not been touched by breast cancer either personally or through friends and family members who have had the disease. After lung cancer it is the number one cause of cancer death in women.

Supplements - Should I take them or not?

Last week the Archives of Internal Medicine published findings from the Iowa Women’s Health Initiative that concluded that “In older women, several commonly used dietary vitamin and mineral supplements may be associated with increased total mortality risk; this association is strongest with supplemental iron. In contrast to the findings of many studies, calcium is associated with decreased risk.

Steve Jobs and You

The world lost a rare individual last week- the likes of which only come along once in a generation. Apple founder and chairman of the board Steve Jobs, by all accounts, was a force to be reckoned with. His innovative thinking changed the world. His technological genius will not be matched for many years to come. We have heard these and similar sentiments since Jobs’ unfortunately early death.

Foods For Good Health

Here is a list of the top ten super foods (according to Web MD): Beans, blueberries, broccoli, oats, oranges, pumpkin, salmon, soy, spinach, tea, tomatoes, turkey, walnuts and yogurt.  As I look at that list it occurs to me how many of these things we will be eating in the months ahead-pumpkin and turkey for Thanksgiving just as a beginning. Add a broccoli salad, some sautéed spinach and a few walnuts in the stuffing and you have a great start to a super foods meal.
