Yes You Can Overcome Obesity

Recent news about obesity being a risk factor for dementia got me thinking about the massive challenge we face with weight in this country. Nothing inspires me more than people who take on the challenge to lose large amounts of weight. We have heard numerous stories from among our own ranks at Brookdale. One young man had always wanted to go skydiving but did not meet the weight requirements. After losing 100 pounds, he achieved that lifelong dream. Another woman said she wanted to lose her weight for her kids-she too lost 100 pounds and is still at it.

Turn Down the Me

Some interesting research has come about because of our ability to image the brain. One such study involves looking at the effect of spirituality on the brain. According to researcher Brick Johnstone of Missouri University, an area in the right parietal lobe known as the "me definer" is less operative in spiritual people.

Be Well on Purpose

At Brookdale, through our Optimum Life program we have a wellness theme every year that relates to one of the six dimensions of wellness. For those of you who don’t know, the six dimensions are: Physical, Emotional, Purposeful, Social, Spiritual and Intellectual. This year our theme relates to the purposeful dimension and is titled Be Well on Purpose.

Medical science has brought miraculous discoveries over the last century which all combined have taken the life span from 47 years in 1900 to 78.3 years currently in the US. The tremendous gain in life span is due to a combination of factors, among them a variety of prescription drugs. Probably the single most significant class of drugs is antibiotics. Bacterial infections that used to routinely kill people are now cured with antibiotics.

Lessons from the Royal Wedding

I have a confession to make-I was among those who got up early to watch the Royal Wedding last week. And I enjoyed every minute of it. I loved seeing the beautiful bride in her much anticipated dress walking with her father; her beautiful sister carrying her train. And her handsome prince anticipating her arrival with his back turned. I loved the majestic music, the spoken words, the happiness and pride of the family members, the horse drawn carriages, the balcony kiss-all of it.
