Facts about The Great Lakes
- The Great Lakes contain 6 quadrillion gallons of fresh water, or one-fifth of the world’s fresh surface water. Only the polar icecaps and Lake Baikal (Siberia) contain more.
- Spread evenly across the continental U.S., the Great Lakes would submerge the country under about 9.5 feet of water.
- The Lakes cover more than 94,000 square miles (larger than the states of New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Vermont, and New Hampshire combined).
- At 10,900 miles, The Great Lakes shoreline is equal to almost 44% of the circumference of the Earth. Michigan has more coastline than any state except Alaska.
- Scientists are monitoring a potential ecological threat posed by Asian Carp, a non-native species that has been spotted within a few miles of Lake Michigan. There are concerns that if the creature migrates into the Lake, they could eventually upend the entire Great Lakes ecosystem.
