Assisted Living Associates of Brookdale Senior Living Earn ALFA Hero Award and Champions

NASHVILLE 5/6/2009

Brookdale Senior Living recognizes that its associates make a huge difference in the lives of the seniors it serves. Recently, one of its associates earned a Hero Award, and 98 of its associates were honored by the Assisted Living Federation of America’s (ALFA) 2009 Hero Awards.

ALFA called for nominations of workers in the assisted living sector, including anyone who has shown extraordinary dedication, courage or leadership. Curtis Bond, LPN of Southerland Place Midlothian, a Brookdale Senior Living assisted living and Alzheimer’s/dementia care community, received top honors and was recognized as the ALFA Hero in the nurse category. Bond will be presented the Hero Award at the National ALFA Meeting in Philadelphia, May 5-7. Another 98 Brookdale associates were honored as ALFA Champions.

In nominating Bond, the team at Southerland Place Midlothian praise Bond as “a living testament to Brookdale’s mission of enriching the lives of those we serve with compassion, respect, excellence and integrity.”

Bond started his employment with Southerland Place in February 2005. He primarily works in the Alzheimer’s/dementia area of the community, and “the residents and their families adore him,” according to Lee and Hanley’s submission. Many of the Clare Bridge residents refer to him as “Dr. Bond.”

Within the nominating essay, the team describes how Bond embodied the four main characteristics of compassion, respect, excellence, and integrity.

• Compassion: “He understands how much a kind word, a hug or just his
presence can mean to a family.”

• Respect: Being a former man of the military, “the military camaraderie
he shares with the male residents can reach down and touch a resident
   who otherwise may seem unresponsive.”

• Excellence: “He is forever willing to go that ‘extra mile’ for a resident,
   their family, and staff.”

• Integrity: “He is a man of his word, and we think the resident of Clare
Bridge can feel this within him.”

“Curtis is most definitely our very own top secret agent,” said the team. “He is someone who is always ‘stirred’ with doing the very best care, and he is never ‘shaken.’”

After the ALFA Heroes have been selected, ALFA acknowledges additional exemplary nominees as Champions of Senior Living.

“Curtis has tremendous heart and epitomizes what we all aspire to be.  He has a caring heart, shows integrity in all of his actions, and humbly serves the residents and their families,” said Bill Sheriff, chief executive officer of Brookdale Senior Living. “We are very proud of him, and proud of all of our exemplary associates.”
